I feel like I need to document this somewhere, not only for story sake, but for my own sake when I inevitably try to remember when this happened. I would have wrote something this weekend, but I was very busy and I had a lot to do, so I’m doing it now.

I was at work on Wednesday 4/14, and I had just finished my weekly MIS Meeting where we update on projects I’m working on, as well as the direction I should be heading over the next little bit, etc. Just to make sure things are on track.

So I go back and sit at my desk and bring up some code I’m working on for Production, and I hear what sounds like a drill above my head. That’s strange, what is DS working on up there…

So I decide to take a look, after getting up from my desk and heading onto the floor toward the stairs to the attic, I notice the lights are off. Also interesting, that means the sound was something else. I head up the stairs and open the door to the attic to see that the fan sitting next to my network switches which pushes the air off of them so they don’t overheat is ablaze.

I was a little shocked, and begin looking around for a fire extinguisher, but I don’t find one (Turns out we don’t keep one upstairs which has already changed) so I head down in and open the office door and tell everyone there is a fire. Turn around and head back upstairs with a couple of others to show them, and TM heads off to grab an extinguisher. As he’s running up the stairs, I met him halfway, grabbed the extinguisher, and ran toward the fan which is now completely engulfed in flames, and start to douse it with a couple of quick bursts.

Flames go out immediately, Baking soda is all over the upstairs attic, but the fire is out. There was a sprinkler just above the fan, which was probably a few seconds away from triggering, but if it had, it would have been a mess as it would likely have doused my servers and a lot of the electronics which exist just below it.

Turns out what was the drill sound was the motor on the fan burning out, so I was extremely lucky to hear it, and it saves me a lot of time and our company a lot of money over the next couple of weeks had the sprinklers have triggered.

The rest of the day, after the fire dept came and inspected the situation and cleared us for reentry, consisted of diagnosing network connections and stuff (Some cables had unplugged from the switch as we were moving it around and stuff, and it was full of baking soda from the fire extinguisher as well, which I had to blow out and stuff, but everything still works and we got everyone re-connected finally.)

Some other notes which complicated things. We had tested the sprinkler systems just that morning (at 11:30), however, we had forgotten to warn the plant, (though we did warn the security company), so when the alarm sounded the plant just sat there instead of doing like they are supposed to do. Because of the false alarm though, when we had the real fire incident that day, at first when I opened the office door and told them we had a fire, nobody really moved. But they quickly bolted into gear when they saw I was serious.

All in all it was a good thing, and more good things happened than bad things, but it was a wake up call, and though we have disaster recovery contingencies, we can point to a real situation now and evaluate where we would be had it been a worst case scenario.

I’ve just been really busy lately. I am on the verge of completing two projects at work that I’ve been working on for a while. Can’t wait to be done with those. Then I move on to a new project for the Production Floor. That stuff is boring though.

While at home I’ve been playing with the iPhone Developer Kit lately. Working on something that I think would be cool. It’s for a pretty niche group of people. But maybe it will be worthwhile. Plus I’ll learn a lot doing it.

We did the OMGA Gameday at the Beginning of April. It was fun. I don’t really have anything specific to go over. If I was going to do a ‘convention report’ I probably should have already done it. Nonetheless, we had a great time, I introduced some great games to new people. I hope they enjoy them as much as me.

Soccer season ended a week ago for both of our kids. That might free up some weeknights now to work on the iPhone thing.

Oh, I signed up for a trial account on WOW. Never played it before but I thought I’d goof of with it for a while. Trial account goes until 5/10/2009. I doubt I continue beyond that, but you never know. Playing a Night Elf Hunter on Silver Hand and an Orc Warlock on Blackwing Lair.

I love love love my computer at work. So much that I’m thinking seriously about getting one for the house as well. Much the chagrin of Valerie. But this thing is amazingly fast. And I work so quickly on the thing.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my Macbook too. But I wish I had a desktop mac as well. I suppose eventually I’ll get one, but with the economy the way that it is, I’m pretty sure that I won’t be getting one any time soon, so I’ll just have to continue to live out my computing days on a Macbook, and a Windows Desktop.

On a side note, I got a free copy of Windows Vista at a Microsoft Event a week or two ago. And I would love to have installed it, mainly so I could do the media sharing with my Xbox 360. Unfortunately, you need at least a gig of Ram, and the old Windows machine at my house only has 512 MB… Perhaps that’s part of the reason I’m so enamored with my new work machine.

Actually it’s probably that, plus the fact that I have multiple monitors now. Which is hard to not have once you get used to it. I can throw so much crap to the second monitor that I need open, but am not actively working on. Couple that with Spaces, and it is just too cool. I am so much faster at work now, and it’s so much less stressful.

Anyway, enough about that.

I trust everyone saw some of the soccer photos of Olivia I uploaded, I never did do a post, just uploaded them one day. Check out the last few pictures added to the gallery if you want to see them. Here’s a link:

That’s enough for now.

It’s been a while, but we’ve been busy here.

I’m busy with some pretty big projects at work. Which are finally coming to fruition. That’s one reason I haven’t been around much anywhere on the Internet lately.

I hope that I finish one of those very soon (within the next week with Customer approval). One awesome side note, is because of equipment concerns I needed a machine to run a program I wrote on the floor. Rather than buying one machine and getting our computers out of the normal replacement cycle, I officially requested a new computer for myself at work, and got it approved… SOOOO!

I’m getting a Mac Pro at work. I’m very excited about that.

As far as after work. Family life is busy now too. Soccer Seasons started up here in Oxford, including Olivia’s first year. I know we have some pictures and video of that, which I will post As soon as I can. But I need to figure out how to capture video from Val’s Camera anyway. I think it has a firewire 800 port but honestly I’ve never looked.

Sarah’s soccer team just started using goalies and positions this year. So her soccer games are becoming far more interesting to watch. I’m also quite excited about that.

And Lastly. I intend to get out of town this weekend for the Debate hoopla. The traffic in town is already quite heavy. Which for a small town in Mississippi isn’t that great. But still. So the Kids and I will be leaving this weekend to go visit Mom in Phenix City. Look to leave a tad early Friday. I was hoping to make it down there before the debate started. But just in case, I’ll go ahead and set the recorder to grab it so I can watch the full thing when I get home. (If it happens that is :p )

Our Society as we know it is doomed. There is just way to much rampant stupidity in this world that it cannot continue in this fashion. I have a couple of stories that I would like to share with you today.

USB Cables
We had to replace a printer that went bad at work. So I had a quote for a printer sent to me and we bought a LaserJet P2015. It’s a light duty printer. Most of the heavy stuff goes to our network printers. This one handles some specific labels, and is in a more convenient area for one of the workers.

So It’s the first time at work I’ve bought a printer that was USB only. Up till now they’ve all been parallel port or ethernet printers. Lately they are all pretty much network printers. The last “personal laser” type printer I’ve purchased was like 3 or 4 years ago. So they are due to be dying soon.

Anyway. I had a USB cable quoted to me as well, since I don’t have any of those lying around at work. I knew I would have to get it. The quote for the cable was $3.99. I turned in the Purchase Requisition and waited.

When the printer came in. I didn’t find the cable. I went back and realized that though I had quoted the cable. I forgot to add it to the Purchase Requisition. No problem. I’ll just go and buy a cable at Office Depot. So I grabbed the company card and went.

The cheapest USB Cable that they had was $24.99……… $24.99….. For a USB Cable. A USB Cable. We’re talking about a cable with four wires and a shield in it.

So I left and went to Radio Shack. They had one for $19.99. So I went to Walmart. They had one for $10.97. Which I ended up purchasing cuz I was tired of driving around town. But I’m disappointed. Why don’t they have a ziplock back with a cable in it I could buy for $7.00 or something.

As an aside, as I was leaving. I was going to get a diet coke too. They were $1.25 plus tax in the cooler for a 20 oz bottle. I went to the Vending Machine. Where they are $1.00 even (including the tax) for the same thing.

Buying a Game at Gamestop
A couple of weeks ago I borrowed an Xbox 360 game from a friend. The game was Forza Motorsport 2. I tend to like racing games. And was always a fan of those Gran Turismo games on Playstation and PS2. But since I don’t have those anymore. He let me try this one to see if I liked it. (It came with his Xbox as a pack in- along with Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which I don’t have any interest in).

I enjoyed the game quite a bit. It had the feel of Gran Turismo, and I liked the “career” mode and everything. It was a good game. So I decided I was going to buy a copy.

I wasn’t really in any rush to get it or anything. They were $59.99 in most of the stores, and I was hoping that they would go down in price. I hate paying $60.00 for a video game. I like when they go on clearance at $20. It’s very, very rare I pay for a new game.

Anyway. Last week I was in Gamestop. (Trying to buy a wavebird to use with our Wii so Sarah and I can play Super Monkey Ball and Mario Kart Double Dash). So I went ahead and looked. They had several used copies of Forza Motorsport 2 for only $29.99 each. That was just to good a deal to pass up I usually pass on used copies at stores like Gamestop and EB because they typically charge $54.99 for games that retail at $60. Or $44.99 for games that retail at $50. At those rates I typically feel it’s worth the extra $5 bucks to go ahead and get a new copy.

But $29.99 for a game that’s retailing at $59.99 Well that hits a critical threshold for me allowing me to go ahead and buy a used game. So I decided upon my purchase and took it to the cashier.

She was about to ring me up when she looked at the game and did a double take.

Cashier: You’re buying Forza Motorsport 2?
Me: Yes.
Cashier: For $30
Me: Yes.
Cashier: You know… you can get Forza Motorsport 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance for only $20
Me: *inquisitively* Huh? No I didn’t know that.
Cashier: Let me show you.

At this point, she grabbed the game and went to the shelf I was just at. Below the copies of Forza Motorsport 2 were a bunch of copies of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. But if you turned these boxes around to the back. They had the cover of Forza Motorsport 2 on the back of it. In fact. This was the pack-in game which I referred to above. Apparently several people sold their pack in games to Gamestop.

So, thanks to a very nice and observant cashier (Which says something good about society), I got to walk out of the store with Forza Motorsport 2 for $40 dollars less than I had intended to pay for it. Along with another game to pass the time with. (Even though it still doesn’t really interest me.)

Anyway. That’s all I’ve got for now. Till next time.
