Sorry this one is so late, But I’ve had an insanely busy month, both with work and with the house and hobbies.

If there was any evidence that I’m getting worse at this running thing, this race is it. I wanted to run the gumtree again to get an idea about where I stood in relation to last year, coming off the heels of the Country Music Marathon, where I ran a bit better than I did in 2011, but part of that was it was my first race, and I ran it pretty conservatively. That was not the case for the last CMM, and it was not the case for last years GumTree, which is currently my 10k PR.

But, I did manage to squeak in under an hour, which I’m happy about, it means I haven’t fallen off the wagon completely. Since this update is coming so insanely late though, I’ll tell you that my next race will be really really bad, as it’s so hot, and I don’t think I’ve run more than 15 miles a week since the GumTree.

As far as coming down the pipe, I was disappointed to note that the St. Jude Memphis Marathon has sold out of General spots. I can still enter, as long as I commit to raising at least $500. I’ve never been one to try to ask friends and family for charity. But I might have to otherwise, I won’t get to do another Marathon this year.

I’m thinking about maybe doing the Mississippi Blues Marathon instead. At least it will give me something to work towards. Everything currently is still up in the air, but my training is taking a nose dive when I wake up at 6:00 am and think, It’s 80 already outside, and I’m not training for a race, I guess I don’t HAVE to run today…

So I’m officially back in training again. After my marathon, I had basically taken December through February off. I ran, but not with a schedule or calendar or anything. And I never ran more than 12 miles.

That ended this week. I registered for the St. Jude Country Music Marathon in Nashville, TN on April 28th. It will be my second half marathon.

As far as my training plan. I just plugged the race day into Runners World smartcoach app on my iPhone, and did the moderate plan. I’ll be running 25-30 miles per week until race day. But they won’t be particularly long.

One thing I will be doing though, is running five days a week instead of four. And the extra day is a speed workout day/tempo run day on Wednesday. I’ve done these types of workouts before, but not with any regularity. I’m looking forward to seeing if I’ll actually gain any benefit. I will say this, the tempo run on Wednesday was the hardest run I’ve had in a while, even though it was short.

I’m not going in with any particular goals other than to have fun, running this one with my friends. Granted, beating my last time is a bit of a goal. Last year I ran it in 2:22:35

I went out for my training run this morning at 5:30 super excited; because I was running in some new shoes.

I am officially breaking in a pair of Asics Gel Nimbus 12 (White & Royal Blue for the curious) for my marathon on December 3rd. This morning I ran six miles in them. I’ll only use them sparingly over the next couple of weeks while I save them up for my race. I plan on them having about 25-30 miles on them before I use them for the 26.2. One short run a week, as well as one ‘long’ run (most likely my 12 miler next weekend)

But it always reminds me about how much I love running when I have new shoes! They feel so awesome for that first 10 or 15 miles or so you get out of ‘em before they settle in and just become normal. It’s a shame you have to work past that before the big race though. I know the reasoning behind that though, you don’t want any surprise blisters 12 miles into the race.

The ‘old’ shoes are also a pair of Gel Nimbus 12 which I started using around September or so. They have 280 miles on them about now. They feel fine for now, though I can definitely feel the road a bit more in these, as I’ve used them fairly heavily over the last couple of months. Oh well, they only have two more long runs they have to work through, and a few shorter ones. One being the dreaded 20 miler scheduled for this Saturday!

Plus it’s not like I’m a tiny 150 pound runner that floats on the road. I haven’t been able to get much more than 350 miles out of a pair of shoes since I started running. Though they do make great walking shoes though after they are retired.

Less than a month now. Starting to get more nervous. Looking forward to tapering though. Tapering begins SUNDAY!!!

I haven’t posted here in a Month? Whoops. I guess training for my race has consumed my life again. I’m on the last page of my training calendar. Though I cheat a little, because it has December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the blank days at the end of November. I ran six miles this morning. I was a little nostalgic because it wasn’t so long ago that six miles would’ve been a weekend long training run. This morning it was mundane daily run.

But I digress.

Well, I’ve gotta get something on here. Hockey season just started again, except the Blues aren’t doing so good again. And we’re only like 10 games into the season. Oh well, still plenty of time.

But someone posted this on Chit Chat, and I LOLed, so I had to share.

Marathon Training is hard. A lot harder than half marathon training was.

I have to run 12 miles tomorrow. I’m not that worried about 12 miles. I’ve run that distance or greater before,,, twice before actually. It was my longest training run before my half marathon last year, and I ran that distance for my half marathon of course. But other than that, the farthest I’ve gone is 10 miles, which I’ve done maybe 4 or 5 times.

So, if I’m not worried about the distance, what is worrying me? Well, the distance I run tomorrow represents the shortest weekend run that I have scheduled between now and a week before my marathon. So the distance that I’ve run twice in my life, becomes the base distance I work up from for the next 11 weeks. With runs of 14, 16, 18, and 20 miles also thrown in the mix between the 12 mi base runs.

I’m not too sure what I think about that. I know I can handle the run tomorrow, but every week for the next 11 weeks? That’s where the hard comes in.

Still, nobody said it was going to be easy, quite the opposite. So I guess that the hard, is what makes it great. (I think that’s a quote from a baseball movie, can’t remember which one, ‘A League of their Own’ maybe?)
