So I just agreed to a trade on BGG. I’m trading my copy of Descent Journeys in the Dark for a copy of Union Pacific.

I really like Descent. I rate it an 8, still do, and we actually still play it a lot. However, we always play KF’s copy. And he has a few expansions too. I don’t have any expansions. If you’ve never played the game, it’s soft of Dungeons & Dragons without the roleplaying. It’s the tactical Miniature monster fight portion of the game.

I actually got the game in a trade a couple of years ago. In that time. I don’t think we’ve played my copy of the game a single time. Maybe once.

Union Pacific has a little bit of promise though. It’s sort of a precursor to Ticket to Ride. Ticket to Ride with a stock element. Maybe a step up from Ticket to Ride, but a step down from Age of Steam. Eh, I don’t know it sounded interesting. It might only be a temporary addition to the game library.

In any case, Volumewise, I’m gaining some shelf space. Descent is in one of the Fantasy Flight Games Coffin sized boxes. Union Pacific is in a box similar to the size of Samurai, and Downfall of Pompeii I think.

This is a good trade for me as far as I’m concerned. We’ve been playing a ton of Descent lately. It’s quickly steaming up my five and dime list for 2008, and I don’t see it stopping for a good while.

It’s scratching the old timey RPG itch for me, and I imagine others in my group, while still being fairly quick and tactical as far as movement and fighting the creatures.

The game is not really about building up your character over time, it’s more about using the dungeon features correctly to be able to kill the creatures in the dungeon safely and effectively. It requires that the users all work together quite well that appeals to my game group.

Bausack (in my case Sac Noir) is one I picked up when we had a few more party gamers in our game group. It’s kind of fun, but to be honest, I think as far as dexterity games go, I have the gamut covered (essentially by one game… Crokinole) and I’m just not sure what this one adds for the amount of space that it requires to set up and play.

They both retail for pretty much the same. So I feel like I’m not losing anything in the trade. Sounds pretty good to me. This has no effect on my Boardgame Purge Goals for this year. Though I do have some news coming soon regarding that. (I’m about to make a huge breakthrough, I think).

On a side note. I love the USPS Click and Ship. Why didn’t I do this sooner. No more waiting in line at the post office. Oh wait. I know why. They don’t let you do Parcel Post on Click & Ship. What’s up with that? Priority Mail just costs more and isn’t worth it. Get on that…

Alright, so I’m giving up two Euros for a piece of Hasbro Ameritrash. You know what? I don’t care.

Risk Clone Wars is a Star Wars Game, that I don’t have, and it actually has a fairly good reputation on BGG of being a nice variant of Risk. It’s got some nice little plastic miniatures, and has a mechanic which shortens the game a bit too.

As far as what I’m giving up:

Regarding Oasis, it’s not like I was going to get Oasis to the table anytime soon, and to be honest, it’s a pretty good game, but I think it’s also a five player only pretty much kind of game. And if that’s the case, why wouldn’t I break out El Grande, or Santiago, or a number of other games I would much rather play first. Not to mention the fact that I know of a couple of guys in Memphis that have Oasis anyway, if I really wanted to get that one to the table.

And as far as Balloon Cup goes, this is a very nice two player game, but the main problem with this one is, I think it’s way beat out by Lost Cities, and Battle Line, and to be honest. I picked up Voltage in the BGG math trade not to long ago, which has a nearly identical mechanic to Balloon Cup, but I feel is done just a little more clean. So I had no problem throwing this little two player game onto the pile as well.

As far as getting Risk Clone Wars to the table, sure, I don’t think there is much a chance of that. But you never know, and Risk is a fairly easy game I can teach to Sarah in a year or two.

All in all I fell like it’s a mutually beneficial trade. Which is how they all are supposed to be :)
