Alright, so I’ve only had it for five days, and despite having a rather unfortunate name. Of which I no longer think it is unfortunate, Apple is taking it back! I love this device.

It is absolutely 100% the perfect device for what I use it for. I don’t think it’s perfect of course, but it doesn’t matter. It is seriously awesome for what I need.

I purchased this device to replace a Macbook which was going on 4 years old. I kept the Macbook in my bedroom, and would use it sparingly at night before bed to check email, read facebook, and in general, goof off.

Well, this does all of that. And actually does it even a little better than my Macbook. One of the things I always wanted to do, was to watch movies and stuff that I had on my desktop computer in iTunes. Macbook never really could do that because it never registered the play. iPad syncs with iTunes, and now when I watch on there, next time it syncs with the desktop registers the play. If I listen to Music or Podcasts on my iPad, it registers those plays as well. This is important to me because I use a lot of Smart Playlists that keep track of these things to figure out what to put on my devices.

It’s lighter than my Macbook was. So it will be great on trips. On Trips 99% of my use was email, facebook, twitter, light web surfing. And you know what else. BATTERY LIFE IS AMAZING! Really Really good. It claims 10 hours for uninterrupted video. Well, under normal use, you can probably count on more like 12 hours. I ran it out by doing stuff solid for two days before it finally shut off.

If I want to do a little work, the on screen keyboard is a little blah, when you turn it sideways, the keyboard is a little small still for my hands. That coupled with the fact that I am a touch typist makes it a little difficult to use as I have to hover my hands over instead of resting my fingers on the display. But they fixed all that. iPad will sync with a bluetooth keyboard. So Bam. I’ll just keep one in the bedroom and take it on trips etc. just in case.

I’ve goofed off with a few of the games. Some of them are better on iPad. Some are a little worse. the bigger screen is nice, but sometimes with having to touch the screen, you obscure the graphics and can’t see what’s going on sometimes. It’s really not that big a deal when the games are well written.

One of the coolest uses was the ‘Small World‘ game. It’s a port of Days of Wonder’s boardgame of the same name. It works awesome on the iPad, and though it’s two player only. Playing a boardgame without any bits is pretty neat, especially when it’s doing all the calculations and everything for you.

Really Really great little device they’ve got here. Oh, and Sarah loves her ‘new’ macbook as well!

I’ve decided to finally embrace the tags. Actually, it’s not that I had anything really against the tags to begin with, just I never added them to the main pages, so I never bothered entering them.

In any case, I finally got around to it, as you can see, These are kind of a replacement for categories, though I will still use both to some degree because I like filtering the RSS feeds, and I haven’t played with the tags enough to know if you can filter the RSS feeds on the tags.

But now they exist at the bottom of every post, and a tag cloud sidebar is also created. It will grow over time. I will be adding tags to many of the older posts on a case by case basis when I get around to it. Probably sometime after I get around to finally purchasing a new machine. My old one is on it’s last legs…

It’s pretty simple if you’ve never used any before. If you see a topic of interest over in the tag cloud, you can click on it to see the other posts with that tag. It should help for finding old information a little bit better. The bigger the text in the cloud. The more posts that I’ve written on that subject.

You would think without a home football game it would be kind of light…

I went to watch the Rebels Rifle team shoot on Saturday. They did alright, I don’t know exactly what they shot, or where they finished, but I’m sure you can go to the web site and find out all those exact kind of things that you may be interested in. It’s http://www.olemisssports.com for those that don’t know.

Anyway, so I was watching the cool new electronic target thingies on their LCD Televisions. They had the resolution way off on those things, as they were spitting out 1.33 aspect ratio to a 1.78 television. So between relays I helped them fix that, made it much clearer. Turns out they did that all last year too, and I never watched the TV’s long enough to notice.

I finally got Valerie to relinquish control of one of the remotes so I was able to flip between the computer showing the results, and the Kentucky/South Carolina game. And later, the Tennessee/Georgia game. Both of which royally sucked.

Anyway, the City was also teaching a hunters education course in the Guard portion of the building. So right about when Val was finishing up, a bunch of potential hunters start pouring into the range to take the live firing portion of their class. Of course, the city has never gotten the hang of scheduling this quite right, but it was alright because Val really was just finishing up.

She recruited me to help pull the electronic targets out of the five firing points that they were going to use. I suppose she doesn’t want people she doesn’t know shooting at targets which cost like $5,000 bucks each or something.

So she has me and a couple of other people grabbing and rolling these targets and stacking them behind each other in one line. I believe it was like 7 targets in a line. The targets are large sort of like movable walls, about 7 feet high. They are on wheels though to make them easy to move.

Alright, so the hunters start shooting, as nearly all the rifle people leave. Val wants to stay behind to put the targets back after they are finished because she’s running more relays the next morning. So I stay behind with her.

Hunters Education finishes up. And We start moving the targets back in place. Now, like I said they are all stacked in a line, and they are like movable wall things. Well, they are also very top heavy… You may see where this is going…

I grab one of the targets, which is probably a little too close to the one in front of it. I lean it back to put it on it’s wheels. Well, the front of the platform hit the wheels on the target in front of it. Which lifted it maybe an inch or two forward. Well, the top heaviness of the design made it fall forward slowly (well not that slowly, but slowly I could watch it but couldn’t save it.) It hit the one in front of it, and five targets begin to fall like dominoes.

I could feel Valerie’s heart sink. Anyway. After getting them all back we tested them and everything seemed fine. But still, it was kind of gut wrenching for a bit.

In the future, I suggest we avoid the domino setup for putting the targets away. That way, one falling can’t affect the other 11. But still. I digress.

I love love love my computer at work. So much that I’m thinking seriously about getting one for the house as well. Much the chagrin of Valerie. But this thing is amazingly fast. And I work so quickly on the thing.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my Macbook too. But I wish I had a desktop mac as well. I suppose eventually I’ll get one, but with the economy the way that it is, I’m pretty sure that I won’t be getting one any time soon, so I’ll just have to continue to live out my computing days on a Macbook, and a Windows Desktop.

On a side note, I got a free copy of Windows Vista at a Microsoft Event a week or two ago. And I would love to have installed it, mainly so I could do the media sharing with my Xbox 360. Unfortunately, you need at least a gig of Ram, and the old Windows machine at my house only has 512 MB… Perhaps that’s part of the reason I’m so enamored with my new work machine.

Actually it’s probably that, plus the fact that I have multiple monitors now. Which is hard to not have once you get used to it. I can throw so much crap to the second monitor that I need open, but am not actively working on. Couple that with Spaces, and it is just too cool. I am so much faster at work now, and it’s so much less stressful.

Anyway, enough about that.

I trust everyone saw some of the soccer photos of Olivia I uploaded, I never did do a post, just uploaded them one day. Check out the last few pictures added to the gallery if you want to see them. Here’s a link:

As you might have remembered from my last post on the subject, this past Saturday the Ole Miss Gamers Association (of which I am a small part) had a gameday to try to promote their club to a wider audience, as well as possibly raising a few funds and in general, have a good time.

It was a full day of Gaming and Prizes. There was a couple of Video Game Tournaments, some RPG One-shots of various systems, a couple of CCG tournaments, and of course, I was in charge of the Board Games.

I also mingled in some of the other games. I wasn’t about to get into an RPG or CCG or anything, but I did play in the Guitar Hero III tournament. Mostly I signed up for Comedic Effect though. Some of those people are insane in their skills. I lost the first round, got sent to the losers bracket, where I managed to win my second match, but quickly lost my third. About two matches away from possibly making it to a final. I can also come to terms with the fact that I will never be able to play this game on any level harder than Medium.

Anyway, the bulk of the day was spent playing and teaching Board Games. I had set up a game library mostly out of my own games. I spent alot of the day just manning the library and explaining some games that others would ‘check out’.

As far as me playing some games, I didn’t really want to make any of the gaming about me. So I tried to avoid picking any of the games that would be played that day. As you can probably tell from my play list, I was mostly successful.

I began the day teaching/playing Boomtown. It’s a nice little game, however, it is extremely luck driven. Granted, you can play to give yourself the best chance of winning, but the dice just don’t get rolled frequently enough to make it an even distribution on which mines would be good or bad to occupy. I did end up winning this game by a fairly large margin. Mostly through huge payouts on two of my mines, and grabbing an early governor card which turned out to net some big mayor bonuses. I like Boomtown, but it’s much better set as a quick game, while you’re having some drinks. But as a serious game goes. I just don’t think it can cut the mustard. It is too luck driven.

After that, I played a game of Apples to Apples. Apples to Apples is a game I used to love, although I haven’t played this one in at least two years. It has been eclipsed in my mind by Attribute. But Apples to Apples is still fun, and surprisingly, despite its being widely (read: walmart) available, alot of people still don’t know much about it. If you’re reading this and are new to games. It’s a decent game to pick up. Why don’t you do yourself a favor and give it a shot.

On a side note, I prefer Apples to Apples with a variant where we throw in a random card that nobody threw in as well. Nobody at the table playing Apples to Apples had ever heard of that, but it’s always fun when the random card gets picked.

After A2A I then sat down and taught and played a couple of games of Qwirkle. Twice with the same group. They came in wanting to learn some Board Games specifically. They asked about Qwirkle. (It is a pretty game) I told them it was basically scrabble without words. And they wanted to try it. They liked it so much they demanded to play it again. I have to agree it is a pretty good game, with a couple of different ways to play it. I’ve only played it about four times, and I do think it suffers a bit from the same problem as Puerto Rico. You can totally be set up by the person to your right. That can skew the game, but if everyone is paying attention, and understands the tile mix, and rules, then it does make for a really good game.

The same group playing Qwirkle then asked about Crokinole, I had set up the board early in the morning and left it set up all day. Of course, with the foot traffic, alot of people asked about it, and I made it a point to always sit someone down and have them play a bit if they asked. Crokinole is one of those games I’ll always have a copy of somewhere in my life from now on. The group playing Qwirkle was just one of several different people that sat down at one time or another and played a quick game of Crokinole.

When then grabbed a few more players and played a couple of games of Liar’s Dice. With the Pirates of the Caribbean movie cameo of this game. More people know how to play it (or at least, aren’t totally unfamiliar with it). The new players found out just how much fun this game can be with the right crowd. I won the first game, but the second, I got knocked out early on a bad call when three people in a row lied about what they had. (Alright, I wasn’t knocked out, but I think I lost 3 dice in the exchange, which severely hampered me for the remainder of my game.)

Mingled into a different crowd and ended up playing a couple more games of Apples to Apples. I really think I should have brought Attribute. With as big a hit Apples to Apples was, I wish I could have shown them the better version of it, or at least, what I think is the better version of it. They would have had a good time with it, but it was all good, they liked A2A.

Around this time, the Super Smash Brothers Brawl Tournament was going on. I’m not really into that game, and I was sitting around chatting with some of the other people who were not playing it. We ended up chatting about Video games, and one of them Mentioned liking Tetris. Well, I jumped at the chance to introduce them to a new boardgame. So I went and grabbed Ubongo.

I don’t really like Ubongo. I like the tetrisy aspect of it, but the dexterity quickly grab the tiny gems before the timer runs out is not nearly as fun to me, but I live with it to introduce it to people that like puzzles. Well, this one was also a hit. After a quick rules explanation, we ended up playing two games. One of them on the hard side of the board (That’s the first time I’ve ever played the hard side).

I kind of feel like this is one I should probably replace the sand timer with a digital timer, we aren’t very strict usually. If someone finishes before the sand goes out, we’ll typically let them move and grab gems for a second or two after (but we don’t let them sit and think long about which gems to grab.) But in hard mode, we had a different problem. There were a couple of times where we were looking at our boards solving the puzzle and for a while, nobody looked at the timer, and finally someone would look up and say, we’re out of time, with nobody having solved the puzzle. No telling how long we were like that…

And finally we finished off the night with a half a game of Descent. We started a bit to late to have any hope of getting this one finished. But we did get it introduced to two new players. (One being one of the Ubongo players who was an RPGer at heart and she had never tried one of our boardgames.) As far as the boardgaming goes, I’m glad we got some new people to at least try a couple of the boardgames. The RPGers and the CCGers and the Boardgamers sometimes don’t really mingle when we have our regular meetings, but with a whole day to play, everyone found time to at the very least go and look at some of the other games being played. And maybe it will help us to talk to each other a little bit more at our meetings as well.

As far as the club as a whole and how everything went, I think that it was a pretty good day. They ended up with about 45 paying customers. So I think they were calling that a hit.

On another side note, I was in the prize drawing, hoping to win one of those Video iPod Nano’s that look so cool. But alas, it wasn’t to be. And then I ended up winning a computer case with the Ole Miss Logo on it. Which was great, it was a nice case, however, I really like my Macbook case I currently have, (It fits it so perfectly and is so small and easy to carry). But looking at the nice case, (which I almost told them I didn’t want and to give it away to someone else) I instead thought Val might like it. Turns out, I forgot, she can’t use the dang thing. It has the Colonel Rebel Ole Miss Logo on it. Which she is not allowed to portray. I completely forgot about that. So now I have a fairly nice computer bag, and nothing to do with it…
