Football gamers sue EA – East Bay Business Times:

Very interesting. I wonder if anything will ever come of this. I remember when this happened. I still like that ESPN NFL 2k5 football game, it was a very good game, and the price of it was only $20. Madden had to lower the price to compete with that during the year.

Right afterwards, it was announced that the NFL had signed the exclusivity agreement with Electronic Arts. That’s when the next year price of the game shot right back up to $49.99.

It’s about as antitrust as I’ve ever seen. Personally I feel like the NFL probably didn’t charge EA enough for the exclusivity. It should not have been viable for EA to do that, then they would’ve had to actually had innovation or technical superiority to sell their games, rather than it being the only game where you could actually play NFL teams and players.

Woodlawn (The Neighborhood I live in) is putting on a Neighborhood-wide Yard Sale on May 5th of This Year. This Saturday, it should be a fairly nice draw and get us a lot of foot traffic from bargain/treasure hunters this summer. In order to continue on with my Purge Quest of 2008, I’ll be putting in some stuff into this yard sale.

There are a couple of games (mostly in my closet) that really have no value to gamers. This is because they are American games that are widely available and quite frankly usually aren’t any good. Some of them are so bad, I don’t even want them infecting my daughter. So, they are going into the Yard Sale.

  • $2 Spare Time Bowling – See my Solitaire Review of this game for why I’m getting rid of it.
  • $2 Spare Time Bowling – Yes, I have two copies of this.
  • $5 The Game of Life – So, fracking, long, and not worth it at all.
  • $8 Lego Super Speedway – Kind of fun the couple of times we’ve played it, but it’s more toy than game. Someone that collects Lego’s might take this.
  • $10 Scrabble Game Folio Edition – Nice travel version of Scrabble, but I don’t think we’ll play it much. It’s kind of high priced for a Yard Sale. But If it doesn’t sell it’s not a huge loss to keep it.
  • $7 Trivial Pursuit – The original Genus Edition. Bought for Nostalgia, but the questions are so dated.
  • $5 Head to Head Poker – I bought this for $5 on clearance. I thought about using the board for a print and play, but I haven’t done so yet.
  • $8 Last Chance Poker – This one is essentially Contract Yahtzee. It’s also known as Sharp Shooters. It has a rather nice dice tray, and is a bunch of six siders and chips.

As of right now, that’s all we’ve got in it. Anything halfway descent I’m going to take to Tennessee Game Days to get rid of in their flea market. Where I know that the game will be loved by those who know what it is.

Some other things I’ll probably get rid of, are a few bags and suitcases, A bunch of books (Computer, Novel, Gambling) I think I’m going to throw in there, My two sets of Slot Car Racers, A bunch of Various Computer Games, Some Old Game Controllers that no longer get used, A couple sets of poker chips I bought on clearance and no longer want/need cuz I found better, Some Glasses and Clothes and stuff, Some really old VHS movies, And a DVD or two.

It’s too bad that this is happening on the same weekend as the Tennessee Games Day. But really I’m trying to Unclutter my life in general as well this year. And a big part of that unclutter goal is my boardgame purge quest, and in order to do that, it involves dropping the number of middle board games I have, and of course the potential for selling them at decent prices is way better at a gaming con flea market than an Oxford Yard Sale. Because of this, I won’t really be able to help VB out with the sale. I am taking the kids with me this weekend to get them out of her hair though.

As you might have remembered from my last post on the subject, this past Saturday the Ole Miss Gamers Association (of which I am a small part) had a gameday to try to promote their club to a wider audience, as well as possibly raising a few funds and in general, have a good time.

It was a full day of Gaming and Prizes. There was a couple of Video Game Tournaments, some RPG One-shots of various systems, a couple of CCG tournaments, and of course, I was in charge of the Board Games.

I also mingled in some of the other games. I wasn’t about to get into an RPG or CCG or anything, but I did play in the Guitar Hero III tournament. Mostly I signed up for Comedic Effect though. Some of those people are insane in their skills. I lost the first round, got sent to the losers bracket, where I managed to win my second match, but quickly lost my third. About two matches away from possibly making it to a final. I can also come to terms with the fact that I will never be able to play this game on any level harder than Medium.

Anyway, the bulk of the day was spent playing and teaching Board Games. I had set up a game library mostly out of my own games. I spent alot of the day just manning the library and explaining some games that others would ‘check out’.

As far as me playing some games, I didn’t really want to make any of the gaming about me. So I tried to avoid picking any of the games that would be played that day. As you can probably tell from my play list, I was mostly successful.

I began the day teaching/playing Boomtown. It’s a nice little game, however, it is extremely luck driven. Granted, you can play to give yourself the best chance of winning, but the dice just don’t get rolled frequently enough to make it an even distribution on which mines would be good or bad to occupy. I did end up winning this game by a fairly large margin. Mostly through huge payouts on two of my mines, and grabbing an early governor card which turned out to net some big mayor bonuses. I like Boomtown, but it’s much better set as a quick game, while you’re having some drinks. But as a serious game goes. I just don’t think it can cut the mustard. It is too luck driven.

After that, I played a game of Apples to Apples. Apples to Apples is a game I used to love, although I haven’t played this one in at least two years. It has been eclipsed in my mind by Attribute. But Apples to Apples is still fun, and surprisingly, despite its being widely (read: walmart) available, alot of people still don’t know much about it. If you’re reading this and are new to games. It’s a decent game to pick up. Why don’t you do yourself a favor and give it a shot.

On a side note, I prefer Apples to Apples with a variant where we throw in a random card that nobody threw in as well. Nobody at the table playing Apples to Apples had ever heard of that, but it’s always fun when the random card gets picked.

After A2A I then sat down and taught and played a couple of games of Qwirkle. Twice with the same group. They came in wanting to learn some Board Games specifically. They asked about Qwirkle. (It is a pretty game) I told them it was basically scrabble without words. And they wanted to try it. They liked it so much they demanded to play it again. I have to agree it is a pretty good game, with a couple of different ways to play it. I’ve only played it about four times, and I do think it suffers a bit from the same problem as Puerto Rico. You can totally be set up by the person to your right. That can skew the game, but if everyone is paying attention, and understands the tile mix, and rules, then it does make for a really good game.

The same group playing Qwirkle then asked about Crokinole, I had set up the board early in the morning and left it set up all day. Of course, with the foot traffic, alot of people asked about it, and I made it a point to always sit someone down and have them play a bit if they asked. Crokinole is one of those games I’ll always have a copy of somewhere in my life from now on. The group playing Qwirkle was just one of several different people that sat down at one time or another and played a quick game of Crokinole.

When then grabbed a few more players and played a couple of games of Liar’s Dice. With the Pirates of the Caribbean movie cameo of this game. More people know how to play it (or at least, aren’t totally unfamiliar with it). The new players found out just how much fun this game can be with the right crowd. I won the first game, but the second, I got knocked out early on a bad call when three people in a row lied about what they had. (Alright, I wasn’t knocked out, but I think I lost 3 dice in the exchange, which severely hampered me for the remainder of my game.)

Mingled into a different crowd and ended up playing a couple more games of Apples to Apples. I really think I should have brought Attribute. With as big a hit Apples to Apples was, I wish I could have shown them the better version of it, or at least, what I think is the better version of it. They would have had a good time with it, but it was all good, they liked A2A.

Around this time, the Super Smash Brothers Brawl Tournament was going on. I’m not really into that game, and I was sitting around chatting with some of the other people who were not playing it. We ended up chatting about Video games, and one of them Mentioned liking Tetris. Well, I jumped at the chance to introduce them to a new boardgame. So I went and grabbed Ubongo.

I don’t really like Ubongo. I like the tetrisy aspect of it, but the dexterity quickly grab the tiny gems before the timer runs out is not nearly as fun to me, but I live with it to introduce it to people that like puzzles. Well, this one was also a hit. After a quick rules explanation, we ended up playing two games. One of them on the hard side of the board (That’s the first time I’ve ever played the hard side).

I kind of feel like this is one I should probably replace the sand timer with a digital timer, we aren’t very strict usually. If someone finishes before the sand goes out, we’ll typically let them move and grab gems for a second or two after (but we don’t let them sit and think long about which gems to grab.) But in hard mode, we had a different problem. There were a couple of times where we were looking at our boards solving the puzzle and for a while, nobody looked at the timer, and finally someone would look up and say, we’re out of time, with nobody having solved the puzzle. No telling how long we were like that…

And finally we finished off the night with a half a game of Descent. We started a bit to late to have any hope of getting this one finished. But we did get it introduced to two new players. (One being one of the Ubongo players who was an RPGer at heart and she had never tried one of our boardgames.) As far as the boardgaming goes, I’m glad we got some new people to at least try a couple of the boardgames. The RPGers and the CCGers and the Boardgamers sometimes don’t really mingle when we have our regular meetings, but with a whole day to play, everyone found time to at the very least go and look at some of the other games being played. And maybe it will help us to talk to each other a little bit more at our meetings as well.

As far as the club as a whole and how everything went, I think that it was a pretty good day. They ended up with about 45 paying customers. So I think they were calling that a hit.

On another side note, I was in the prize drawing, hoping to win one of those Video iPod Nano’s that look so cool. But alas, it wasn’t to be. And then I ended up winning a computer case with the Ole Miss Logo on it. Which was great, it was a nice case, however, I really like my Macbook case I currently have, (It fits it so perfectly and is so small and easy to carry). But looking at the nice case, (which I almost told them I didn’t want and to give it away to someone else) I instead thought Val might like it. Turns out, I forgot, she can’t use the dang thing. It has the Colonel Rebel Ole Miss Logo on it. Which she is not allowed to portray. I completely forgot about that. So now I have a fairly nice computer bag, and nothing to do with it…

I hate these things. I wish I could just turn the things off, that way nobody would see my “Gamerscore” and I wouldn’t see theirs. I’m not sure what purpose they serve, they’re just there to taunt me. I look at my Gamerscore, it is significantly lower than most of the people in my Friends list. Therefore, I’m somehow inferior, at least in Xbox World.

Also, I’m in that recreation group, which I’m not sure what that does anyway, because the matchmaker frequently pits me against people in the pro or underground categories.

My main problem with the Xbox Live Achievement System is that sometimes, (And I try to avoid this, but it’s definitely hard sometimes), I’ll play games I don’t even want to play. Or in a way I don’t want to play them… just to unlock a freaking achievement. I’m not quite as bad as some people, though. I mean. I won’t go out of my way, and if it turns out to be too hard, or too time consuming, I will usually give up rather quickly rather than persevering. I just don’t care that much. But if they turn out to be easy enough, I’ll give them a shot.

To me, this takes away the whole point of a video game. If you’re doing this, you’re not playing a game because it’s something fun to do, you’re playing a game, because you need to finish something. (Sound familiar? That’s called work).

What do you think?

Our Society as we know it is doomed. There is just way to much rampant stupidity in this world that it cannot continue in this fashion. I have a couple of stories that I would like to share with you today.

USB Cables
We had to replace a printer that went bad at work. So I had a quote for a printer sent to me and we bought a LaserJet P2015. It’s a light duty printer. Most of the heavy stuff goes to our network printers. This one handles some specific labels, and is in a more convenient area for one of the workers.

So It’s the first time at work I’ve bought a printer that was USB only. Up till now they’ve all been parallel port or ethernet printers. Lately they are all pretty much network printers. The last “personal laser” type printer I’ve purchased was like 3 or 4 years ago. So they are due to be dying soon.

Anyway. I had a USB cable quoted to me as well, since I don’t have any of those lying around at work. I knew I would have to get it. The quote for the cable was $3.99. I turned in the Purchase Requisition and waited.

When the printer came in. I didn’t find the cable. I went back and realized that though I had quoted the cable. I forgot to add it to the Purchase Requisition. No problem. I’ll just go and buy a cable at Office Depot. So I grabbed the company card and went.

The cheapest USB Cable that they had was $24.99……… $24.99….. For a USB Cable. A USB Cable. We’re talking about a cable with four wires and a shield in it.

So I left and went to Radio Shack. They had one for $19.99. So I went to Walmart. They had one for $10.97. Which I ended up purchasing cuz I was tired of driving around town. But I’m disappointed. Why don’t they have a ziplock back with a cable in it I could buy for $7.00 or something.

As an aside, as I was leaving. I was going to get a diet coke too. They were $1.25 plus tax in the cooler for a 20 oz bottle. I went to the Vending Machine. Where they are $1.00 even (including the tax) for the same thing.

Buying a Game at Gamestop
A couple of weeks ago I borrowed an Xbox 360 game from a friend. The game was Forza Motorsport 2. I tend to like racing games. And was always a fan of those Gran Turismo games on Playstation and PS2. But since I don’t have those anymore. He let me try this one to see if I liked it. (It came with his Xbox as a pack in- along with Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which I don’t have any interest in).

I enjoyed the game quite a bit. It had the feel of Gran Turismo, and I liked the “career” mode and everything. It was a good game. So I decided I was going to buy a copy.

I wasn’t really in any rush to get it or anything. They were $59.99 in most of the stores, and I was hoping that they would go down in price. I hate paying $60.00 for a video game. I like when they go on clearance at $20. It’s very, very rare I pay for a new game.

Anyway. Last week I was in Gamestop. (Trying to buy a wavebird to use with our Wii so Sarah and I can play Super Monkey Ball and Mario Kart Double Dash). So I went ahead and looked. They had several used copies of Forza Motorsport 2 for only $29.99 each. That was just to good a deal to pass up I usually pass on used copies at stores like Gamestop and EB because they typically charge $54.99 for games that retail at $60. Or $44.99 for games that retail at $50. At those rates I typically feel it’s worth the extra $5 bucks to go ahead and get a new copy.

But $29.99 for a game that’s retailing at $59.99 Well that hits a critical threshold for me allowing me to go ahead and buy a used game. So I decided upon my purchase and took it to the cashier.

She was about to ring me up when she looked at the game and did a double take.

Cashier: You’re buying Forza Motorsport 2?
Me: Yes.
Cashier: For $30
Me: Yes.
Cashier: You know… you can get Forza Motorsport 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance for only $20
Me: *inquisitively* Huh? No I didn’t know that.
Cashier: Let me show you.

At this point, she grabbed the game and went to the shelf I was just at. Below the copies of Forza Motorsport 2 were a bunch of copies of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. But if you turned these boxes around to the back. They had the cover of Forza Motorsport 2 on the back of it. In fact. This was the pack-in game which I referred to above. Apparently several people sold their pack in games to Gamestop.

So, thanks to a very nice and observant cashier (Which says something good about society), I got to walk out of the store with Forza Motorsport 2 for $40 dollars less than I had intended to pay for it. Along with another game to pass the time with. (Even though it still doesn’t really interest me.)

Anyway. That’s all I’ve got for now. Till next time.
